Stay safe at home
Seniors are at a higher risk of injury or death from house fires. Wrenford Fire Rescue wants to help you and your loved ones stay safe. Use the tips below to prevent fires and falls in your home.
Smoke alarms and carbon monoxide
Smoke alarms save lives. Make sure you have one on every level of your home, outside each sleeping area, and inside every bedroom. Test them every month. If you have trouble hearing the alarm, ask Fire Station 1 about special alarms with flashing lights or vibrations.
Carbon monoxide is a silent, odourless gas that can make you sick or worse. If your carbon monoxide alarm goes off, or you feel dizzy or nauseous, leave your home right away. Call 911 from a neighbour's house or a cell phone.
Heaters and smoking
Space heaters and smoking are the most common causes of fire injuries for older adults. If you use a space heater:
- Keep it at least one metre (three feet) away from beds, curtains, and furniture.
- Never leave it on when you leave the room or go to sleep.
- Do not dry shoes or clothes on it.
If you smoke, do it outside. Use a large, deep ashtray. Soak butts in water before throwing them away. Never smoke in bed or if you are taking medication that makes you drowsy.
Kitchen safety
Never leave cooking unattended. Stay in the kitchen while frying or broiling. Wear short sleeves or roll up long sleeves so they don't touch the stove. If a pan catches fire, turn off the heat and cover it with a lid. Do not use water on a grease fire.
Plan your escape
Keep eyeglasses, medications, and a phone near your bed. If you use a walker or wheelchair, keep it ready by the door. Plan two ways out of every room. If the alarm sounds, get out and stay out. Call 911 once you are safe.
Prevent falls
Falls can happen quickly. Remove tripping hazards like loose rugs and cords. Add non-slip strips to your bathtub and shower. Install grab bars near the toilet and in the shower. Make sure hallways and stairs are well lit.
Free home safety check
Wrenford Fire Rescue offers a free home safety check for residents aged 65 and older. A firefighter will visit your home to test smoke alarms, check for fire hazards, and answer your questions. Call 519-555-0115 to book a visit at Fire Station 1 (Headquarters), or contact us at [email protected].
