Arts & health: healthy aging through the arts

A weekly arts workshop series for older adults in Wrenford, led by a professional artist and wellness coordinator to support creativity and social connection.

About the program

The Arts & Health project is a weekly workshop series designed to support mental well-being, social connection, and creative expression for older adults in Wrenford. Led by a professional visual artist and a Community Wellness Coordinator, each session explores a different medium—such as painting, mixed media, or seasonal crafts—in a relaxed, drop-in format. Research shows that regular creative activity can help reduce feelings of isolation and improve mood, making this program a great way to stay active and engaged.

Who can join

This program is open to all residents aged 55 and over. Whether you are an experienced artist or trying something new, the focus is on enjoyment and community rather than technical skill. Assistive devices and mobility aids are welcome, and all sessions are held in barrier-free spaces. If you have specific dietary needs or require a companion to attend with you, please let us know when you register so we can accommodate your group.

When and where

Workshops run every Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., beginning the first week of September and continuing through the spring. Sessions are hosted at the Ambrel Lake Recreation Centre, using the older adults' lounge and adjacent program rooms. The centre is located at 1300 Ambrel Lake Road, with plenty of accessible parking nearby.

Registration and fees

You can register by phone or visit the front desk at any recreation centre. Walk-ins are welcome if space is available, but we recommend booking ahead so we can prepare enough supplies for everyone. The program costs $5.00 per session to cover art supplies. A materials fund is available for residents who need financial assistance—just ask the staff at registration. You can also use your Leisure Pass to cover the fee.

Accessibility and supports

All venues are fully accessible, with barrier-free washrooms, level entry, and ample parking. The Community Wellness Coordinator can arrange interpreter services or large-print materials with five business days' notice. If you need help getting there, Wrenford Access can book a specialized transit ride to the centre. Just call 519-555-0100 or dial 311 to schedule your ride.

Connect with other seniors

Many participants stay after the workshop to share a light snack and chat. We encourage you to bring a friend or neighbour to make it a regular social outing.
