What are mandatory activities?
When you receive Ontario Works, the province expects you to take steps toward finding work or preparing for a job. These steps are called mandatory activities. They are designed to help you become independent as quickly as possible.
Your Employment Action Plan
You will work with a case worker to create an Employment Action Plan. This plan is a simple roadmap that lists the activities you need to do and when you need to do them. You can change the plan if your situation changes, but you must tell your case worker first.
Activities that count
The following activities are considered mandatory under Ontario Works:
- Looking for work and applying for jobs
- Attending job interviews
- Taking approved training or education courses
- Completing work experience through employment support
- Working with an employment support professional
Reporting your progress
You must report back to your case worker regularly. Most recipients in active job search mode complete biweekly progress check-ins. You will need to log the number of job applications you sent, interview dates, and hours spent in training. Keep your own records so you have proof if you are asked.
When you can be excused
You do not have to do mandatory activities if you have a valid reason. You can be excused or paused if you:
- Are sick or injured and cannot work or look for work
- Are caring for a child under five years old or a dependent family member with special needs
- Are pregnant
- Are facing a temporary crisis, such as a sudden move or a family emergency
You must tell your case worker as soon as you know you will need a break.
If you miss an activity
If you miss a scheduled activity without telling your case worker, your benefits may be reduced or stopped. This is called a sanction. If this happens, you have the right to ask for a review. You must request a City review within 30 calendar days of receiving your decision letter. Learn more about the appeals and reviews process.
