How water meters work

Every building connected to the City's water system needs a water meter to measure how much water you use. The meter ensures you are billed only for the water that actually flows into your home or business. Wrenford bills for water every two months, and the meter readings are sent automatically by a small radio transmitter attached to the meter.

Getting a meter installed

New homes and businesses

When you apply for a building permit, the City creates a temporary water account. Before the property can be occupied or used, a water meter must be installed. There is no charge for the meter or the installation. You or your contractor just need to let us know when the construction is finished so we can schedule the installation.

Existing unmetered homes

If you live in an older home that is still on a flat-rate water charge, you can request a meter installation. Simply call Service Wrenford or email [email protected] to book an appointment. Our crew will install the meter at no cost to you.

Commercial and multi-unit properties

Developers and property managers must submit a Water Meter Sizing Form before construction begins. This ensures the correct meter size is ordered for your building's expected water demand. Once approved, contact the Water Billing office to schedule the installation.

Preparing for your installation

For the installer to work safely and efficiently, please make sure the area around your main water shut-off valve is clear. The valve is usually located in your basement or utility room on a pipe coming out of the floor. You do not need to be home during the installation, but the installer may need brief access to locate the valve and connect the meter.

How your bill changes

Once your meter is installed, your water, wastewater, and stormwater charges will be based on actual usage instead of a flat rate. Because the City reads your meter every two months, your first bill after installation might cover a longer period than usual. This can sometimes look like a higher charge. If you need to spread the cost, ask about our pre-authorized billing instalment plan when you open your account.

Maintenance and care

You do not need to maintain or service your water meter. The City replaces meters automatically when they reach the end of their service life. If you notice a leak, a running toilet, or unusually high water usage, check our How to read your water meter guide to see if the leak indicator is active, and contact a plumber right away.
