Why read your water meter?
Reading your meter helps you check your water use, spot leaks early, and verify your Understanding your water bill.
Where to find your meter
In Wrenford, your water meter is usually located inside your home. Look for it in the basement, a utility room, or near where the water line enters the house. If you have a remote read-out device on the exterior of your home, it will show the same numbers as the meter inside.
Locating the register
The meter face (or register) shows your total water consumption. It may have spinning dials, a digital screen, or a combination of both. The numbers are measured in cubic metres (m³). One cubic metre equals 1,000 litres.
How to read the numbers
Follow these steps to get an accurate reading:
- Look at the digits to the left of the decimal point. Write down all the whole numbers.
- Ignore the digits to the right of the decimal point. They show fractions of a cubic metre and are not used for billing.
- If your meter has spinning dials, read them from left to right. Write down the number the pointer has just passed.
- If you see a red sweep hand or a small triangle indicator, ignore it for billing. You will only use it to check for leaks.
Checking for leaks
Your meter can help you find hidden leaks before they cause high bills or water damage.
- Make sure no taps, toilets, or appliances are running.
- Look at the red sweep hand or small triangle indicator. If it is moving, water is flowing somewhere in your home.
- Check your toilets and dripping faucets first. If the indicator keeps moving, you may have a leak in your plumbing or underground service line.
If you cannot find the leak inside, call a licensed plumber. For City-owned lines, contact us at Water account inquiries and information.
What to do with your reading
You do not need to submit your reading every month. The City reads your meter automatically or sends a reader to collect it. However, keeping a log of your readings is a great way to track your Water conservation and efficiency toolkit efforts.
If you notice a sudden jump in your usage or a very high bill, compare your meter reading to the previous month. You can also use the How to pay your water bill page to understand how your charges are calculated.
