Request a new traffic sign

Ask the City to install a new stop sign, yield sign, or crossing sign. Learn how to submit a request, review criteria, and contact the Roads team.

When to request a new traffic sign

You can ask the City to install a new stop sign, yield sign, speed limit sign, or pedestrian crossing sign. We review every request to make sure it matches provincial safety standards and traffic volumes. We do not install signs just because a resident or business wants one. Traffic signs are placed where they are needed to keep drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians safe.

How to submit your request

Submit your request online through our service portal, call 311, or email the Roads & Winter Maintenance team at [email protected]. You will need to provide the exact street address, the type of sign you are requesting, and the reason for the request. If you are a property owner or developer, include any engineering reports or traffic studies that support your request. Please also tell us if you have already tried other safety measures, like adding street lighting or trimming vegetation.

How we review your request

Once we receive your request, our traffic engineers will review it against the Ontario Traffic Manual guidelines. We look at factors like traffic speed, daily vehicle counts, sight lines, pedestrian activity, and past collision history. If the location meets the criteria for a new sign, we will add it to our installation schedule. If it does not meet the criteria, we will explain why and may suggest alternative safety improvements, such as speed cushions, raised crosswalks, or additional road markings.

Processing time and fees

Most standard requests are reviewed within six weeks. If your request involves a new private development or a complex traffic study, the review period may be longer. There is no fee for residents requesting a sign for a public street. If you are a developer or business requesting a sign as part of a private project, a standard administrative fee of $250.00 applies to cover the engineering review. All approved signs are installed using City-owned materials and standard mounting hardware.

What happens after approval

If your request is approved, our Roads & Winter Maintenance crews will schedule the installation. We usually install signs during regular business hours, but urgent safety requests may be installed within 48 hours. You will receive a confirmation email once the sign is in place. If your request is not approved, you can ask for a second review by submitting updated traffic data or a new collision report.
