How we evaluate crosswalk requests
Living on a busy street can be stressful when you need to cross. You can ask the City to install a new crosswalk if you feel the current conditions are unsafe. Our Roads & Winter Maintenance team reviews every request using a set of safety and engineering criteria.
What we look for
We do not install crosswalks on every corner. We evaluate your request based on:
- Vehicle traffic volumes and average speeds
- Proximity to schools, parks, senior centres, or transit stops
- Recent collision history at that location
- Distance to the nearest existing crosswalk (we usually space them at least 100 metres apart)
How to make a request
Submitting a request is free and takes only a few minutes. You can share your concerns through:
- Calling Wrenford 311 at 519-555-0100
- Using the Service Wrenford Online portal
Please include the exact street name, the nearest intersection, and a photo if you can. Our Roads team will log your request and assign it a tracking number.
What happens next
After you submit your request, our engineers review it against the City's safety standards. In many cases, we will send a crew to measure traffic speeds and count vehicles during peak hours. This fieldwork usually happens within two weeks of your request.
Once the data is collected, we compare it to provincial guidelines. This review typically takes 4 to 6 weeks. If the location meets the criteria, we add it to the Capital Works budget for the next construction season. If the data does not support an installation, we will notify you and explain why. You can also request a review of the decision within 30 days.
Installation and signage
When funding is approved, our Roads crews schedule the installation. Standard crosswalks include white diagonal stripes painted on the asphalt and a flashing yellow beacon if the road is wide or fast-moving. We also ensure the adjacent sidewalks are smooth and that curb ramps are accessible for wheelchairs and strollers.
