What is the programme?

Ontario's Property Tax Deferral Programme is a provincial loan that helps eligible homeowners pay their 2026 property taxes. The province pays your tax bill directly to the City, and you repay the loan with interest when you sell the home or pass away.

What is covered?

  • Your 2026 property tax bill (both the interim and final amounts).

You cannot defer taxes from previous years, late penalties, or interest. The programme also does not cover Wrenford's Vacant Home Tax.

How to apply

You must apply online through the province's website. The application portal opens in early January each year. You will need your property roll number and a valid email address.

If you have already been in the programme, you can log in to review your account or renew your deferral for the coming year.

Important notes

  • You must claim your Home Owner Grant every year. It does not renew automatically. Claim it on the province's website before your tax due date to avoid penalties.
  • If you previously selected automatic renewal, you will be charged the standard provincial interest rate unless you cancel it through your online account.
  • If you are on the Wrenford Tax Instalment Plan (WTIP) or a pre-authorized payment plan, you must cancel it 30 days before your next payment date to qualify for deferral.

Moving or selling your home

When you sell or transfer the property, the deferred amount (plus interest) must be paid in full. The City will be notified of the change of ownership through the provincial Land Registry. Make sure your mailing address is updated with both the Province and the City so you receive important notices.
