Waste education resources for schools

Free waste education workshops, facility tours, and resources for Wrenford classrooms from kindergarten to grade 12.

Waste education for your classroom

Students who learn about waste avoidance and sorting at school develop habits that last a lifetime. These resources help teachers bring practical waste education into the classroom and inspire young leaders to share what they learn with their families.

Waste Wise Schools workshops

The Waste Wise Schools program offers free, curriculum-linked workshops for students in kindergarten to grade 12. We work with local environmental educators to help students understand where their waste goes and how to keep it out of the landfill.

Each class receives four interactive sessions plus take-home activities. Topics include:

  • What happens to waste after it leaves your curb
  • Sorting green bin, blue bin, and black cart materials
  • Preventing litter and keeping our ravines clean
  • Classroom action day (poster campaign, outdoor cleanup, or waste audit)

These workshops are also available for school green teams and sustainability clubs.

Worm composting workshops

For younger students, we offer free worm composting workshops for grades kindergarten to five. Led by trained environmental educators, these hands-on sessions introduce students to the science of worms and show how food scraps turn into nutrient-rich compost.

Students get to care for their own classroom worm bins and learn how to keep them healthy. It is a fun, practical way to see the whole cycle of organic waste reduction in action.

Waste management facility tours

Groups of students and teachers can book a guided tour of the East Wrenford Waste Management Facility. Students see how the city sorts recycling, processes green bin organics, and manages landfill operations. Tours run from April to October and require advance booking.

How to register

Schools and teachers can register their classes by completing the online Waste Wise Schools form or by contacting [email protected]. Please submit registration requests at least four weeks before your preferred workshop date.

If you know a teacher who might be interested, you can share our Waste Wise Schools flyer (PDF) with them.
