Waste management strategy

Learn about Wrenford's goals, programs, and how you can help keep waste out of the landfill through reduction, recycling, and organics collection.

Our waste management strategy

Wrenford is committed to managing waste in a way that protects the Tamsin River watershed and keeps our neighbourhoods clean. Our Waste Management Strategy 2026–2030 sets clear goals for reducing the amount of waste we send to the East Wrenford Waste Management Facility. Our target is to divert 60 per cent of all residential waste from the landfill by 2030.

Diverting waste means keeping it out of the landfill through reuse, recycling, and composting. It saves money, cuts greenhouse gas emissions, and preserves resources for future generations. This strategy builds on the success of our current collection programs and introduces new ways for residents and businesses to participate.

Key priorities

Reduce and reuse first

The most effective way to manage waste is to not create it in the first place. We encourage residents and businesses to choose products with less packaging, bring reusable bags when shopping, and repair items instead of replacing them. Every time you choose to reuse or decline a single-use item, you help Wrenford reach its zero waste goals.

Recycling and organics collection

Wrenford provides curbside collection for all residents. Your garbage is collected every other week, while your Blue Box recycling and Green Bin organics are collected weekly. We also accept paper yard-waste bags biweekly from April to the end of November. Keeping these streams separate at home is the best way to ensure they can be processed properly.

Hazardous waste and special materials

Items like paint, batteries, motor oil, and electronics must never go in your curbside carts. We host regular Household Hazardous Waste collection days at the East Wrenford Waste Management Facility from May to October. You can also drop off these materials at the Northgate Drop-off Depot on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Construction and bulky waste

Renovations and building projects generate a lot of waste. The Site Alteration By-law 2022-071 requires developers and homeowners to sort construction materials before disposal. Large items like furniture and appliances can be scheduled for bulk waste pickup or taken to our drop-off depots.

Progress and reporting

We track our progress using data from collection routes, depot visits, and resident surveys. The City publishes an annual waste management report that breaks down tonnage diverted versus tonnage landfilled. You can view past reports, including the Waste Diversion and Recycling Review 2024 and the Green Bin Programme Summary 2022, on the View waste management reports.
