Information about someone else

Learn why the City usually cannot share personal information about another person and what steps you can take if you need it.

Why we protect personal information

Under the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (MFIPPA), the City of Wrenford must keep your personal information private. This means we cannot give out information about another person, even if they live or work in Wrenford. Privacy laws are in place to protect everyone in the community.

When the City can share information

We can only share personal information about someone else in very specific situations:

  • You have written consent. If the person has signed a release form allowing us to share their information with you, we can do so.
  • A court order requires it. If a judge or legal authority orders the City to release the information, we must comply.
  • It is not considered "personal information." Some records, like general business information or publicly available property details, may not be protected under the same privacy rules.

How to make a request for information about someone else

If you believe you are eligible to receive information about another person, follow these steps:

  1. Ask the person for a signed consent form. The form must clearly state what information they agree to share and with whom.
  2. Submit a freedom of information request through our online portal or by mail.
  3. Attach the signed consent form to your application. If the person cannot provide consent, please explain the reason in your request.

Processing times and next steps

Once you submit your request, the City will review it within 30 business days. You will have three free hours of staff time to search for the information. If the City cannot provide the information, we will send you a letter explaining why. You can appeal the decision if you believe the information should be shared.

Need help or have questions?

If you are unsure whether the City can release the information you are looking for, or if you need a copy of the consent form, visit the Privacy Officer during regular business hours. You can also reach them by phone or email.
