Make a freedom of information request

Learn how to submit a request for City records under the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.

What you can request

Under the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (MFIPPA), you have the legal right to ask for records held by the City of Wrenford. This includes council reports, service requests, environmental data, and meeting minutes. You can also ask for information about yourself or someone you are legally authorized to represent.

Types of requests

  • Personal information request: Records that contain information about you. There is no application fee for these requests.
  • General information request: Records that are not about a specific person. A $5.00 application fee applies to start these requests.

How to submit your request

Keep your request clear and specific. Vague requests like “all records on any topic” take much longer to process and may cost more. Please include the exact documents you want, the City department that might hold them, and the specific dates or date ranges for the records. You can submit your request in any of these ways:

  • Online through the Service Wrenford portal
  • By email to [email protected]
  • By mail to the City Clerk’s Office, Wrenford City Hall, 100 Mercer Street, Wrenford, ON N4Q 1A1

What happens next

  1. Acknowledgement: We will confirm we received your request within two business days.
  2. Review: A case manager will check your request to make sure it is clear and that the City actually holds the records you are asking for.
  3. Search: We will contact the relevant departments to locate the files. You will not be charged for the first three hours spent searching, retrieving, or preparing records.
  4. Fee estimate: If the search is expected to take more than three hours, we will send you a fee estimate. You can choose to pay, revise your request, or cancel it.
  5. Review and release: Staff will prepare the records. We will remove any information that is protected by law, such as private personal details of other people or security information. We will send your records to you by email or mail.

Time limits and appeals

The City has 30 business days to respond to your request. If your request is complex or requires records from another municipality, we may extend the deadline. We will contact you in writing to explain any delay and provide a new expected completion date.

If you are not satisfied with the City’s response, you have the right to ask the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario to review the decision. The Commissioner’s office is independent and provides guidance on your rights.
