Running for office

To run for mayor or council, you must meet the eligibility rules in the Municipal Elections Act, 1996. You will need to file a Declaration of Eligibility before the nomination deadline. The City Clerk's office provides a Candidate Information Package with step-by-step instructions and required forms.

After the election, candidates must file a Statement of Election Expenses form by December 26, 2026. This deadline is 60 days after election day. If you file late, a late fee of $50.00 applies for each day it is overdue. Keep clear records of every donation and expense.

Election sign rules

Campaign signs are a normal part of election season, but they must follow specific rules to keep streets and sidewalks safe. The Election sign bylaws cover where you can place signs, how big they can be, and when they must come down.

You must keep election signs at least two metres back from the curb and all intersections. Signs cannot block sight lines for drivers or pedestrians. If you spend more than $10.00 on election advertising, you must track it and report it in your financial disclosure.

When the election is over, signs must come down quickly. You have a 48-hour removal period after the polls close on election day. If signs are left up longer, the owner may face a fine of $100.00 for a first offence or $250.00 for a second offence within the same election cycle. The City will remove signs after the deadline and bill the owner.

Get paid to work on election day

The City hires temporary staff to run polling stations. These roles are open to anyone who can show they are not supporting a specific candidate. You do not need prior experience, but you must complete one hour of online training and attend a three-to-four-hour in-person session before election day.

Pay rates vary by role. Presiding Election Officials earn $34.00 per hour. Alternate Presiding Election Officials earn $28.50 per hour. Election Officials and Rovers earn $22.00 per hour. Shifts may be extended based on voter turnout. You will be paid by direct deposit on November 6, 2026. Workers aged 65 to 70 can opt out of Canada Pension Plan contributions by filing form CPT30. You can apply through the Election employment portal.
