Overview
If you are running for mayor or council, or if you are supporting a candidate, you can put up election signs in Wrenford. All signs must follow the Municipal Elections Act, 1996 and City of Wrenford By-law 2026-050. The rules cover where you can place signs, how big they can be, and when you must take them down.
When you can put signs up and take them down
You may place election signs on the ground starting on nomination day, October 2, 2026. Signs must stay up until the polls close on election day, October 26, 2026. All signs must be removed within three days after the election, by October 29, 2026. Signs left past this date will be treated as illegal dumping and removed at your expense.
Where you can place signs
You may place signs on:
- Sidewalks and boulevards (the strip of grass between the sidewalk and the street)
- Private property, with the homeowner's written permission
You cannot place signs on:
- Parks, playgrounds, or pathways
- Traffic islands, medians, or roundabouts
- Utility poles, street light poles, traffic signal poles, or transit shelters
- Land owned by Tamsin College or the school boards
Size, height, and spacing rules
Keep your signs within these limits so they do not block sightlines or create hazards:
- Maximum height: 1.5 metres from the ground to the top of the sign.
- Maximum face area: 0.6 square metres before the election period. Up to 2.0 square metres once the election period begins.
- Setback from the road: Keep a two-metre gap between the sign and the curb or edge of the roadway.
- Setback from intersections: Keep a two-metre gap from the corner of any intersection.
- Spacing: Leave at least three metres between signs placed by the same candidate.
Signs must be staked or weighted securely so they cannot blow into the street or onto the sidewalk.
What you cannot attach signs to
To keep the city's visual character and protect public infrastructure, do not attach, tape, or nail election signs to:
- Street light poles or traffic signal poles
- Hydro poles or transit shelter frames
- Painted poles or walls in the Downtown Historic District
- Bus stops or transit route signs
Using clear adhesive or staples on painted surfaces is not allowed. Violations will be reported to By-law Enforcement.
Report a complaint
If you see a sign that breaks these rules, you can file a complaint. You must provide your name and contact information; anonymous reports are not accepted.
Call 311 (from inside the city) or 519-555-0100 (from outside). You can also email [email protected] with the exact address, a description of the issue, and a photo if you have one.
How to dispose of old signs
Once the election is over, take your signs to a local recycling depot. Large wooden or metal frames should be taken to the East Wrenford Waste Management Facility or the Northgate Drop-off Depot. Check the How to dispose of election signs for the best recycling options in your neighbourhood.
