What you can do with election signs
During a municipal election, you can put up signs to support a candidate or your own campaign. The rules are set by the Municipal Elections Act, 1996 and our local Election Sign By-law 2025-108. These rules keep our streets safe and make sure signs are taken down quickly after the election.
How to put up and remove signs
Election signs do not need a sign permit. You can place them on your own property, on public property with permission, or in the road right-of-way where allowed. Do not attach them to hydro poles, traffic signs, street trees or park benches. You must take all signs down within 48 hours after the election results are posted. Please dispose of the materials in your regular garbage or recycling bin, or drop them off at the East Wrenford Waste Management Facility.
Please make sure your sign is visible but does not create a hazard for drivers or pedestrians. The City works hard to keep our Tamsin River Trail System and local parks clean, so keeping signs off natural areas helps protect our wildlife and waterways. By following these simple steps, you help keep Wrenford safe and tidy for everyone.
Rules and fees
Keep these limits in mind to avoid fines:
- Size: Signs cannot be larger than 0.9 square metres (14 by 20 inches).
- Placement: Signs must be securely anchored and cannot block sight lines for drivers or pedestrians.
- Lighting: Illuminated or flashing signs are not allowed.
- Fines: There is no fee to put up a legal sign. Leaving a sign up past the 48-hour deadline or placing it in a restricted area is a violation. The fine for a first offence is $100.00. Repeat violations carry a $250.00 fine.
