When you need a sign permit

Under the Sign By-law 2020-088, you need a permit to build, place, move, display, change, or do major repairs on a sign in Wrenford. This applies to commercial, industrial, and multi-unit residential properties.

Before you apply, make sure your sign meets the rules in the by-law. Check the size, height, and location limits for your zone. If your building is in a heritage area, you may also need a heritage alteration permit.

Some large developments, like shopping plazas or mixed-use buildings, may have a comprehensive sign plan already approved. If your property falls under one of these plans, your signage must follow the approved framework. If your proposal does not match the plan, you may need to apply for a development permit amendment.

Signs that do not need a permit

You do not need a permit for the following signs, as long as they follow the rules in the Sign By-law:

  • Window signs and temporary signs for sales or open houses
  • Neighbourhood identification and community activity signs
  • Directional signs and parking signs on private property
  • Home occupation signs and bed and breakfast signs
  • Political and election signs
  • Flags and banners under a certain size
  • Construction site signs that meet the size limits
  • Signs smaller than 0.1 square metres
  • Signs located completely inside a building or garage

How to apply

You can apply for a sign permit online or in person at City Hall.

Online: Create an account on the City's planning portal and submit the Permanent Sign Permit Application Form. You will need to upload a site plan showing where the sign will go, and photos or drawings of the proposed sign.

In person: Visit the Planning & Development counter at Room 201, Wrenford City Hall, 100 Mercer Street, Wrenford, ON N4Q 1A1. Staff can hand you a printed application form.

Once your application is reviewed and approved, you will receive a notice with the required fee. Pay the fee online or at the service counter. The approved permit and stamped drawings will be sent to you by email.

Permit fees

The application fee is $75.00 per permit. This covers the review of your application and the issuance of the permit. If you need a building permit at the same time because the sign requires structural engineering drawings, there will be additional building permit fees.

Inspections

After you install the sign, you must request a final inspection. Email photos of the installed sign, your permit number, and the property address to [email protected]. A City inspector will check that the sign matches the approved drawings and meets all safety and by-law requirements.
