How to book a picnic site

Most picnic areas operate on a first-come, first-serve basis. If you want to guarantee a reserved table or shelter, you can apply for a park rental permit.

  • Applications open the first Tuesday of September for the May to October season.
  • Submit your application at least 10 business days in advance.
  • For events with over 50 people or multi-day gatherings, apply five weeks in advance.

Rules for park picnics

To keep our parks safe and enjoyable for everyone, please follow these guidelines:

  • Alcohol: Alcoholic beverages are not permitted in city parks unless you have a special permit under the Alcohol in Parks Programme. For more information, visit By-laws.
  • Barbecues and fire pits: Personal propane barbecues are allowed in manicured parks. Place them on concrete or dirt, away from grass. Wood fire pits require a permit under Learn about park fire safety.
  • Tents and canopies: Tents or canopies larger than 3 metres by 3 metres require a permit.
  • Reserved tables: Tables painted green or marked with a sign are reserved for permit holders. Ask casual users to vacate these areas if needed.
  • Vehicle access: Do not drive on grass to load or unload supplies. Wheel your equipment in from the nearest parking lot. Learn about Learn about park parking rules for on-street parking near parks.
  • Clean up: Take all waste with you. Use the bins provided or bring bags home.

Fees and insurance

Standard picnics for small groups are free. If you are booking a shelter or hosting a large event, there may be a rental fee. Events requiring a special event permit may also need to show proof of liability insurance. Check Rent a park shelter or picnic site for the full rate sheet and insurance requirements.
