How alternate side parking works

Alternate side parking rotates which side of the street you may park on, depending on the date. This simple rule keeps the road clear for the crews who sweep our streets in spring and clear snow in winter. You do not need a permit to follow these rules, but you do need to move your vehicle when the date changes.

Spring street sweeping (April to May)

During the spring cleaning season, the city divides each calendar month into two halves. You must park on the side of the street that matches your house number for that half of the month.

  • 1st to 15th: Park on the side where your house number is odd (1, 3, 5, etc.).
  • 16th to the last day of the month: Park on the side where your house number is even (2, 4, 6, etc.).

Always move your car between 6:00 p.m. and midnight on the 15th. Enforcement officers begin checking the streets at midnight, and vehicles left on the wrong side will receive a ticket.

Winter snow removal (December 1 to March 31)

In the winter, the city enforces an overnight parking ban from 2:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m. every day. This gives plow crews the space they need to clear residential streets and parkways without hitting parked cars.

During these hours, you must park on the side of the street opposite the lane the plows will use. Blue signs mark the active plow routes for each street. You are free to park on these streets during the daytime, but you must check the signs before evening to see which side will be cleared overnight.

Tips for staying compliant

  • Set a recurring calendar reminder for the 15th of every month so you never forget to switch sides.
  • Look for the white signs with a blue background that show the current parking side. If you cannot find one on your street, call 311 or email [email protected] for assistance.
  • If you live in a large building where house numbers are not visible from the street, contact the Parking Administration team so they can add a temporary marker for you.
  • Remember that these rules apply to all streets bordering city parks and boulevards. If you are unsure about your specific street, check the posted signs or use the address lookup tool on Check parking regulations and bylaws.
