Work at a Wrenford aquatic facility
Becoming a lifeguard is a great way to earn money, stay active, and keep your community safe. You can work at the Tamsin Valley Leisure Centre, Northgate Aquatic Centre, or Kingfisher Outdoor Pool. All you need is the right certification from the Lifesaving Society. Follow these steps to get started.
Step 1: Start with Bronze Star
Bronze Star is your first step. It teaches you swimming skills, self-rescue techniques, and basic fitness. You will practice stroke mechanics and get ready for lifesaving training. You must be at least 10 years old. If you have taken Rookie, Ranger, or Star Patrol, you will do well. Full attendance is required. The program runs for several weeks during the spring and summer seasons. Register through our online portal or at the front desk of any recreation facility.
Step 2: Move on to Bronze Medallion
Bronze Medallion builds on Bronze Star. You will learn the four parts of water rescue: judgment, knowledge, skill, and fitness. You will practice problem-solving and decision-making in the water. You must be 13 years old or older. You do not need a current Bronze Star award, but you must pass a practical test. The course also covers CPR-C and first aid basics. Full attendance is required.
Step 3: Complete Bronze Cross
Bronze Cross is where you start learning actual lifeguarding duties. You will expand your rescue skills and practice active surveillance, which means watching the pool to prevent accidents. You will also work on teamwork and communication. You must be 13 years old or older. You need a Bronze Medallion award (it does not need to be current) and a valid Ontario workplace-approved Intermediate First Aid and CPR-C certificate. Full attendance and a practical exam are required.
Step 4: Earn your National Lifeguard certification
This is the final step to becoming a certified lifeguard in Canada. National Lifeguard training covers advanced rescue techniques, equipment use, and emergency management. You will learn how to lead a team and handle complex situations. You must be at least 15 years old. You need a Bronze Cross award (current or past) and a valid Intermediate First Aid and CPR-C certificate. You must pass a written exam, a rescue practical test, and a fitness assessment. The course is intensive and usually runs over a few weeks in the summer.
Step 5: Get hired
Once you have your National Lifeguard certification, you are ready to apply for a job. We post all open lifeguard positions on our Careers page. You can also apply in person at the service counter of any aquatic facility. We hire based on availability, certification status, and previous experience. Having a current First Aid and CPR-C certificate will make you a stronger candidate.
Registration and fees
Programs open for registration on the first Monday of March for the spring and summer season. You can register online, by phone, or in person. A non-refundable registration fee applies to each course. Fees vary by location and course length. Check the Registration and booking FAQs page for current pricing and payment options. If you need financial help, visit our Recreation fee assistance page to see if you qualify for a waiver or reduction.
Rules and guidelines
All candidates must follow the Indoor pool guidelines and facility policies. This includes wearing appropriate swimwear, showering before entering the water, and following staff instructions. If you miss a session, you may need to make up the time or pay to retake the course. Read the full Facility information and hours page for operating times and location details.
