What you can do

As a property owner or building manager, you can schedule your mandatory annual fire safety inspection online or by phone. The inspection confirms that your multi-family dwelling—such as an apartment building, condominium complex, or a house converted into three or more rental units—meets all safety standards. You can also use the inspection to request a free safety consultation for your tenants or staff. We recommend reviewing the Ontario Fire Code requirements beforehand, and our officers are happy to explain how the rules apply to your specific building layout and tenant mix.

How to schedule

To book your inspection, contact the Fire Prevention Office at least five business days in advance. You can reach us by email at [email protected] or by phone at 519-555-0115 during administration hours (Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.). When you call or write, please provide your property address, the total number of residential units, and your preferred date and time for the visit. An inspector will confirm your appointment and send a checklist of items to have ready, such as your current fire safety plan and recent maintenance records for alarms and sprinklers.

Fees and rules

The initial inspection is included in your fire safety plan permit fee. If our inspector must return to your site after issuing a deficiency notice to verify that corrections have been made, a re-inspection fee of $150.00 applies. You must settle any outstanding fees before requesting further inspections. If you need to cancel or reschedule, please give five business days' notice to avoid charges. Inspections cannot proceed if the site is inaccessible, unsafe, or if the required property representative is missing.

After the inspection

You will receive a detailed report listing any safety hazards or code violations. Critical deficiencies must be fixed immediately, and all other items must be corrected within 30 days. Once repairs are complete, you must call to schedule a follow-up inspection. Keep a copy of the inspection report and your updated fire safety plan in a secure but accessible location. Sharing this information with your tenants helps everyone stay prepared for emergencies. Continued non-compliance may lead to enforcement action under the Fire Code.
