When you need a sign permit

A sign permit lets you install, change, or repair a sign on your property in Wrenford. The Sign By-law sets rules for the size, height, and placement of signs to keep streets clear and safe. You must have a permit before you put up any sign that catches the eye of a driver or pedestrian.

When a permit is required

You need a sign permit for:

  • Building or placing a new sign
  • Moving a sign to a new spot
  • Changing the size or message on an existing sign
  • Making major repairs to a sign structure

When you do not need a permit

You do not need a permit for:

  • Small signs under 0.1 square metre
  • Signs inside a building that cannot be seen from the street
  • Street or traffic signs placed by the City
  • Temporary political or real estate signs that follow the rules
  • Vehicle signs if the vehicle is not parked for more than six hours

How to apply

1. Check the rules

Make sure your sign fits the Sign By-law. If you need to break a rule, you will need a development variance permit first.

2. Gather your documents

You will need a site plan showing where the sign will go, a drawing of the sign, and proof of property ownership.

3. Submit your application

Bring your package to the One-Stop Development Shop at Room 200, Wrenford City Hall, 100 Mercer Street, or upload it through the Wrenford ePlan Portal.

4. Pay the fee

The application fee is $450.00. You can pay by credit card, debit, or cash at City Hall.

Review and approval

Staff will review your application for four weeks. If everything meets the rules, we will email your approved permit. If we need changes, we will send you a list of conditions to fix.

Installation and inspection

Once you have the permit, you can hire a contractor or build the sign yourself. You must install the sign within twelve months of approval, or the permit will expire. After the sign is up, email a photo to Contact planning and development to book a final inspection. Staff will visit the site to make sure the sign matches the approved drawings and does not block sight lines.
