When you need a plumbing permit

You need a plumbing permit for any new plumbing installations or alterations to your plumbing system. This includes adding fixtures, changing pipe layouts, or installing water heaters and furnaces. If you are simply replacing an existing fixture with the same type and model, a permit is usually not required.

Who can apply

In Wrenford, plumbing work must be performed by a licensed Ontario plumber. If you are a contractor, you must hold a valid plumbing ticket and an active City of Wrenford business licence. Homeowners may apply for a plumbing permit for their own single-family home, provided they will live in the home and perform the work themselves. Homeowners must follow the Ontario Building Code and accept responsibility for the safety and compliance of all work.

How to apply

You can submit your plumbing permit application through the Wrenford Permit Portal. The online system is the fastest way to apply and allows you to track your application status in real time. You can also submit a completed application form by email to [email protected] or drop it off in person at the Planning and Development desk in Wrenford City Hall.

Make sure you include all required drawings and specifications. Simple applications are reviewed within five business days. More complex projects may take 15 to 25 business days.

Permit fees

Plumbing permit fees are set out in the Fees and Charges By-law 2025-151. Use the Building Permit Fee Calculator to estimate your total cost before you apply. The base application fee for a standard plumbing permit is $140.00. Fees cover the administrative review and all required inspections.

Scheduling inspections

Most plumbing projects require at least two inspections: a rough-in inspection before you cover any pipes, and a final inspection once all fixtures are connected. You must book your inspections through the Wrenford Permit Portal or by calling 311. Requests for an inspection on the following business day must be submitted by 3:00 p.m. on the current business day.

If an inspector finds work that does not meet the Ontario Building Code, you will receive a notice of correction. You must fix the issue and book a re-inspection. Re-inspection fees apply under By-law 2025-151 if the work is unready, inaccessible, or if you cancel your appointment after 2:00 p.m. on the day of the inspection. You can only book inspections up to 10 business days in advance.
