Transit terminal elevators undergo scheduled upgrades for winter access

Starting Monday, March 16, you will see the City carry out scheduled upgrades to the elevators at the Downtown Transit Terminal to make sure you have safe, barrier-free access before the busy winter travel period begins.

The project focuses on replacing the old elevator control panels with new, fully accessible units that feature tactile buttons and voice guidance. You will also see new winter-rated anti-slip treads installed at the main entrance to help prevent falls during icy conditions. These improvements are a key part of the Accessibility at the City and will help us meet the latest standards under the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA).

"We know that reliable, barrier-free access is essential for getting around town, especially when the snow starts falling," says Katrina Doucet, Accessibility Coordinator (AODA). "These upgrades will ensure the terminal remains fully accessible and safe for everyone, including those who use Wrenford Access or need mobility aids."

The Downtown Transit Terminal will stay open throughout the project. To keep you moving safely, the City will set up a temporary, staffed ramp at the main entrance from Monday to Friday, 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Wrenford Transit staff will be on hand to assist with luggage, wheelchairs, and strollers while the elevator work is underway. We expect the project to wrap up by the end of April.

If you have questions about accessible parking or need help navigating the terminal, please call 311 or visit our Accessibility policy and plan page online.
