Snow clearing plan details priority routes for 2026 winter

The City of Wrenford has released its updated Winter Maintenance Plan for the 2026–2027 season, setting out exactly how crews will clear streets and sidewalks when the first snow falls. The plan aligns with the on-street parking ban that begins December 1 and guides all winter operations across the city.

“Our goal is to keep roads and walkways safe and usable through every winter event,” said Samuel Adeyemi, General Manager of Infrastructure and Planning. “We have refined our scheduling and equipment deployment so crews can respond quickly, even when temperatures drop and storms overlap.”

The plan prioritizes major arterials and transit corridors first. Crews will treat streets like Benchlands Drive, Northgate Boulevard, Corvid Way, Eastfield Road, and Wrenford Line as soon as snow reaches five centimetres. Residential side streets will be cleared once snow reaches eight centimetres, unless they are steep hills or provide direct access to schools and hospitals.

Sidewalk clearing follows the same priority system. Crews focus on high-traffic areas, school zones, and major pathways like the Tamsin River Trail System. The City will also maintain the main segments of the trail network and clear ice from key pedestrian routes before adjacent bike lanes.

When extreme cold hits, the City activates its Extreme Weather Response and warming centre strategy. If temperatures fall to -4°C or below (or feel like -5°C with wind chill), warming centres open across the city. These spaces provide a safe place to rest, hot drinks, and support for anyone experiencing homelessness. Residents play an important role in keeping Wrenford safe. You must shovel snow and ice from the sidewalk next to your property within 24 hours of a snowfall, or by 10:00 a.m. the next morning. Fines under the Winter Maintenance and Parking By-law 2020-097 apply if you do not clear your walkway. Report missed plowing, ice buildup, or parking violations by calling 311 or visiting the Wrenford 311 portal.

Get ready for the season by clearing your driveways, keeping emergency kits in your car, and checking on neighbours. For full step-by-step guidance on winter travel and home preparation, see our winter preparedness guide.
