Sidewalk patio permit applications open for summer 2026

Applications for sidewalk patio permits are now open for the 2026 season. Local businesses can apply through the City's online service portal or in person at the Service Wrenford counter in City Hall.

Patios transform our streets into welcoming spaces for neighbours to gather, and we want to make the process as simple as possible this year. "We know how important patios are to our local businesses and for 2026 we are keeping fees flat and speeding up approvals," said City Manager Robert Eng. "It is all part of our ongoing commitment to support the Wrenford business community and keep our streets lively."

The summer patio season runs from May 1 to October 31. Businesses looking to operate patios on the public sidewalk or curb lane must submit a completed application package. The City's standard processing time is ten business days, so applicants are encouraged to submit early to avoid delays. A standard annual permit fee of $250.00 applies, and a $50.00 administrative fee is charged for late renewals.

This year, the City has updated its design guidelines to make it easier for businesses to plan their spaces. The updated rules allow for lightweight overhead protection, wind screens, posts, frames, integrated lighting, and other accessories. Businesses must also ensure their patios meet accessibility requirements so everyone can enjoy the space. Existing patios have three years to update to meet these standards.

Ground-floor businesses can also apply for storefront seating during business hours. This new option requires minimal paperwork and carries no application or permit fees. Eligibility has been expanded to include non-food businesses, as long as they maintain clear pedestrian access.

Businesses intending to serve liquor on their patio must ensure their provincial liquor licence includes patios in their service area before applying. The City does not issue liquor licences, but compliance is required for approval.

To get started, visit the sidewalk patio permit application page or pick up a form at the Service Wrenford counter, 100 Mercer Street. For questions about zoning, design guidelines, or the application process, contact the Planning and Development team at [email protected] or call 519-555-0100.

As the weather warms up, crews from Roads & Winter Maintenance will also begin sidewalk plowing and spring repairs. Residents can report damaged sidewalks or request new crosswalks through the City's online service portal or by calling 311.
