What is a sidewalk patio permit?

A sidewalk patio permit lets a business use public land, like sidewalks or curb lanes, for outdoor seating. This programme helps local shops and restaurants offer a welcoming space for customers while keeping pedestrians safe. All patios must follow the Traffic and Parking By-law 2014-075 and the City's Roads & Winter Maintenance rules.

Who needs a permit?

If you run a restaurant, café, bar, or retail store that wants to place tables, chairs, or barriers on public property, you need a permit. Patios that sit entirely on your private property behind the building line do not need this permit, but they must still meet zoning rules.

Key requirements

Before you submit your application, review these rules to make sure your patio design works:

  • Clear width: Leave at least 1.8 metres of clear walking space so wheelchairs and strollers can pass safely.
  • Setbacks: Keep all structures 0.6 metres back from the curb lane and 1.2 metres from the building face.
  • Accessibility: The patio must not block ramps, crosswalks, or transit stops. You may need to provide a level, slip-resistant surface.
  • Insurance: You must carry general liability insurance of at least $2 million and name the City of Wrenford as an additional insured.
  • Fire safety: If your patio is larger than 30 square metres, the Fire Station 1 (Headquarters) requires a fire prevention inspection and a clearly marked emergency exit.

How to apply

Follow these steps to get your permit:

  1. Download the Sidewalk Patio Application Package 2026.
  2. Fill out the site plan and layout drawing. Show the exact placement of tables, barriers, and utility connections.
  3. Attach your proof of insurance and a letter from your property owner, if you do not own the building.
  4. Email the full package to [email protected] or drop it off at City Hall, 100 Mercer Street.

Engineering staff review each application within 10 business days. We will email you an approval, a revision request, or a notice of denial. If your design needs changes, you can resubmit at no extra cost.

Fees

The annual permit fee is $250.00. You can pay online through the City's business portal, by phone at 519-555-0100, or in person at the Service Wrenford counter. A $3.50 processing fee applies if you pay with a credit card.

Renewal

Permits are valid from May 1 to October 31 each year. Renewal notices go out in April. You must submit a renewal application and proof of updated insurance before October 15 to keep your patio open for the next season. Late renewals carry a $50.00 administrative fee.
