Northgate Branch library reopens after community garden expansion

The Wrenford Public Library — Northgate Branch reopens today, June 22, 2026, following a community garden expansion that adds outdoor reading spaces and a new seed library. The project, located at 900 Northgate Boulevard, was funded through a combination of municipal capital grants and community donations. It gives neighbourhood residents a place to grow vegetables, herbs, and flowers right outside the library doors.

The expansion includes three raised garden beds, a compost station, and a weatherproof seed exchange cabinet. Patrons can now borrow packets of seeds, seedlings, and gardening tools, just as they would check out a book. A small greenhouse will also be available for seed starting in early spring. Library volunteers and community partners will host monthly planting workshops starting in July, covering topics like soil preparation, companion planting, and water conservation.

Residents are invited to visit the new space this week to see the finished garden and pick up their first seed packets. The seed library operates on a simple rule: take what you need, and return seeds from your harvest for next year. No library card is required to borrow from the outdoor exchange, though patrons who want to use the indoor reading area must have a valid library card. The library is open Monday to Thursday, 9:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., and Friday and Saturday, 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

"This expansion is a perfect example of how we can turn public spaces into living classrooms," said Robert Eng, City Manager. "The garden brings people together, supports local food growing, and strengthens the connection between the library and the Northgate neighbourhood."
