Fire department warns of increased brush fire risks ahead of summer

The Wrenford Fire Department is reminding residents to take extra care with open fires and outdoor burning as summer approaches. With warmer temperatures and drier conditions on the way, the risk of brush fires across the city is increasing.

"If the weather stays dry and windy, a single spark can quickly turn into a large, dangerous fire," says Deputy Fire Chief Simon Hartley. "We want everyone to enjoy the outdoors, but keeping our community safe means following basic fire prevention steps."

Residents who plan to burn yard waste should check the weather forecast and ensure they have a valid permit. The City offers a $25.00 seasonal open-air burning permit, valid from April 1 to October 31. When burning, you must use a mesh spark guard with openings no larger than 1.5 centimetres, and burning is only allowed between 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. daily. Permits take about three business days to process, so plan ahead. For full rules, visit Open-air burning and fire permits.

To reduce the risk of fires starting in the first place, clear dry leaves, grass clippings, and brush away from your home, fences, and sheds. Keep a safe distance between fire pits and any structures or vegetation. If you notice smoke or see a fire growing too large, leave the area immediately and call 9-1-1. Do not try to fight a brush fire yourself.

The City also reminds property owners to test their smoke and carbon monoxide alarms regularly, especially during seasonal changes. You can find tips on fire safety and emergency preparedness at Extreme weather and storm preparedness and Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.
