When you need a permit
Starting a fire in your yard or at a community space in Wrenford usually requires a permit. The seasonal window runs from April 1 to October 31. During dry periods, the province may declare a fire ban that stops all outdoor burning. Always check the current fire ban status with the provincial government before you light a match.
You also need a permit if you want to use a community fire pit in a City park. Portable wood-burning fire pits are not allowed in City-owned spaces. If you prefer, you can bring a propane fire pit or book a park shelter with a built-in pit.
Safety rules for backyard fire pits
Keep yourself and your neighbours safe by following these rules:
- Place your fire pit at least 3 metres away from your house, garage, fence, or property line.
- Do not place it under trees, low branches, or near overhanging plants.
- Use a metal spark guard or screen. The openings must not be larger than 1.5 centimetres across.
- Keep a garden hose or a bucket of water right next to the pit.
- Never leave the fire unattended. An adult must watch it the entire time.
- Extinguish the fire completely before you go inside or leave the area.
What you can and cannot burn
Only burn clean, dry firewood that you bought locally or harvested from your own property. Burning the wrong materials can damage local trees, spread pests, and create harmful smoke.
Do not burn:
- Painted, stained, or pressure-treated wood
- Wood with glue, resin, or nails
- Green or freshly cut wood
- Yard waste, garbage, rubber, plastic, or furniture
- Any material from outside Wrenford
Time restrictions and reporting
You may only burn between 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. to keep smoke from disturbing neighbours during quiet hours. High winds can push smoke too far, and low winds can trap it near the ground. Pick a calm day when possible.
If a fire goes unattended or gets out of control, act fast:
- Call 911 immediately for an out-of-control fire.
- Call 311 or 519-555-0111 for an unattended fire that is still contained.
