Downtown Transit Terminal shelter construction begins May 20

Construction to install a new weather shelter at the Downtown Transit Terminal is set to begin on May 20. The project will cover the main bus boarding area at 1 Market Square and is expected to be finished by late June.

The new structure will provide covered seating for waiting passengers, protect the digital timetable display, and improve accessibility with a level boarding platform. The shelter is part of the city's ongoing transit infrastructure upgrades, designed to make daily commutes easier regardless of the weather.

During construction, expect some lane changes on Market Square and Mercer Street. Work hours are Monday to Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The city has approved a Construction traffic management plan to keep you and your vehicle moving safely around the site. Crews will also follow Construction noise permits rules to keep disruptions to a minimum. Crews working on the terminal sidewalk will use Street use permits to safely manage foot traffic. You can expect minor delays during peak morning hours, but Wrenford Transit will continue running all regular routes.

"This shelter is a practical step toward making our transit network more comfortable and reliable for everyone who uses it," says City Manager Robert Eng. "We know waiting in the rain or snow is tough, and this project directly addresses that."

The terminal will remain open throughout the construction period. You can still buy fares and access washrooms at the downtown terminal. For real-time updates on transit service or street closures, visit Service Alerts or call 311.
