Apply for a construction noise permit
If your construction project requires noisy work between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m. on weekdays, or outside standard daytime hours on weekends and statutory holidays, you must get a construction noise permit. This permit gives you temporary permission to exceed the noise limits in Noise By-law 2016-122.
When you need a permit
You must apply if your work involves hammering, sawing, or using mechanical tools that can be heard beyond your property line during restricted hours. This includes equipment like concrete mixers, air compressors, jackhammers, and bulldozers. Private gatherings or non-construction events do not qualify for this permit.
How to apply
Submit the Construction Noise Permit Application form online or by mail. You must apply at least five business days before the work is scheduled to start. The City will review your request and issue the permit by email or mail if approved.
The maximum length for a single permit is 30 days. If your project runs longer, you must apply for a new permit for the next period.
What to include in your application
Fill out all required fields in the application. You will need to provide:
- The exact address or site description of the work location
- The dates and hours you need the permit
- Your related building permit number
- A description of the work and why it cannot be done during normal daytime hours
- The name, phone number, and email of the on-site contact person
- Your business name and contact details
- A plan for how you will reduce noise and protect neighbours
Notify your neighbours
It is your responsibility to warn all adjacent residential properties about the noisy work before it begins. You must provide written or verbal notice at least three days before the work starts. The City expects you to keep noise as low as possible and follow all conditions on the permit.
Permit fees
There is no fee to apply for a construction noise permit.
Permit conditions and revocation
The City can alter or cancel your permit at any time if neighbours file complaints or if you do not follow the noise mitigation steps you promised. If your permit is revoked, you must stop the noisy work immediately until you receive a new permit or return to standard hours.
Report a noise issue
If you are disturbed by construction noise outside of permitted hours, you can file a complaint by calling 311 (inside city limits) or 519-555-0100 (outside city limits). For noise that involves criminal behaviour or an emergency, call the Wrenford Police Service or dial 911. When you call, have your name, address, and a description of the noise ready so our officers can respond quickly.
