The Parks & Trails team is asking residents to get their hands dirty at the annual community planting day on July 5, 2026, at Centennial Gardens. The event gives neighbours a chance to help plant native wildflowers, shrubs and small trees around the formal gardens.
Crews will have everything ready. The city provides the plants, soil, tools and gloves. You just need to bring your energy and a willingness to learn. The planting day runs from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at 5 Victoria Street. If it rains, the event moves to July 6. Check Service Alerts for a last-minute update.
"Planting native species helps our local bees and birds, and it keeps the gardens looking bright for everyone who walks by," says Maya Chen-Watson, Parks Planner. "We have a great group of volunteers every year, and this is a low-pressure way to get involved and meet your neighbours."
Here is what you need to know before you go:
- Closed-toe shoes are required for safety.
- Wear sun protection and bring a water bottle.
- You can register online through the Parks & Trails portal, or just show up at the cenotaph entrance at 9:00 a.m.
- Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.
If you cannot make it on planting day, you can still help. The city runs a tree planting programme every spring and fall, where volunteers plant street trees and park seedlings. You can also sign up to help maintain community garden plots at Find community garden plots starting in March.
