The Parks & Trails team is closing a section of the Tamsin River Trail System near Benchlands Lookout Park today, Tuesday, February 3, to remove ice dams and clear debris. Crews will work from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on the paved and gravel path along the west bank of the Tamsin River, just below the main lookout.
Heavy freezing rain over the past week has created large ice dams along the creek bank. These formations can block natural drainage, make the trail surface unsafe to walk or cycle on, and pose a falling hazard for people passing underneath. City crews are using mechanical equipment to break up the ice and clear the waterway so it can flow freely as temperatures rise.
Please avoid the closed section while work is in progress. You can still enjoy other parts of the 64-kilometre trail system, including the flat, well-maintained paths at Riverside Flats Park and the boardwalk at Ambrel Lake Park. If you see ice buildup or a downed branch elsewhere on the trail, report it using the online form or call 519-555-0100.
"Winter conditions in the ravine can create hazardous ice formations that put both visitors and staff at risk," says Fiona Gallagher, general manager of Community Services. "We appreciate your patience as we clear the path and keep the trail safe for everyone to use when the snow melts."
The trail section will remain closed until the ice is fully removed and the surface is inspected for safety. Check the Parks & Trails page or the Learn about park maintenance services page for updates on winter trail clearing and seasonal status reports. You can also call 519-555-0100 for the latest road and trail conditions.
