Free tree planting program registration opens for spring 2025

The City of Wrenford is opening registration for its spring 2025 tree planting program. Starting Friday, January 10, 2025, at 8:30 a.m., residents can sign up to receive free trees to plant on their private property through the Canopy for Wrenford initiative. This year, the City will distribute 300 trees to help expand the urban forest across the city.

"This initiative gives our neighbours a simple way to improve the health of our streets and yards while making Wrenford even greener," said Maya Chen-Watson, Parks Planner. "We are thrilled to provide these trees at no cost and deliver them right to your doorstep so you can enjoy the shade and beauty they will bring for years to come."

Residents are limited to one tree per household for this spring round. The City will deliver the trees to your address in the spring once registration closes on March 31, 2025. You will need a suitable spot in your yard or on your property line where the tree can thrive. The City provides detailed guides on the Parks & Trails page to help you choose the right species for your space and learn how to care for your new tree after planting.

If you are not sure whether a tree is allowed on your property, check the Apply for a tree removal permit page to see if your property is subject to the Tree Protection By-law 2018-045. If your property has protected trees, you may need a permit before planting new ones nearby.

The Canopy for Wrenford program is part of the City's broader goal to increase green space and improve air quality. By planting trees on private land, residents play a direct role in building a cooler, healthier neighbourhood for everyone.
