Free compost available for residents during compost awareness week

The City of Wrenford is giving back to residents during Compost Awareness Week by offering free compost while supplies last. Residents are welcome to bring their own containers and shovels to collect the nutrient-rich material, which is perfect for gardens, flower beds, and landscaping projects.

The free compost will be available at the East Wrenford Waste Management Facility, located at 3500 Concession 4 Road. The drop-off will run from Saturday, October 4 to Sunday, October 5, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. This is a self-serve station, so please bring a shovel and your own containers. Each household can take up to four five-gallon pails. Please use tarps to cover your load and secure it safely in your vehicle before driving home.

Compost is perfect for spreading around the base of shrubs, raking onto lawns to boost grass health, or mixing into new garden beds. Please keep children and pets away from the loading area, and wear sturdy shoes and gloves when shoveling. Traffic flow will be directed by posted signs, so follow the crew members on site.

"Compost is a wonderful way to close the loop on organic waste and give it a second life," says Ben Achterberg, Waste Programs Supervisor. "It helps feed your plants, holds moisture in the soil, and keeps yard waste out of the landfill." The compost is made from organic material collected through the Green Bin program and the city's seasonal yard waste depot.

Residents who want to start composting at home can learn more about the backyard composting guide or apply for a backyard composter rebate of up to $20.00 when you buy a certified composter. If you have questions about sorting your waste or need help with the Green Bin program, contact the Waste Wise team at [email protected] or call 519-555-0128.
