Emergency shelter site selected at Eastfield location in September

On September 17, 2025, the City of Wrenford announced a potential site for a new permanent integrated emergency shelter in the Eastfield neighbourhood. The location at 450 Eastfield Road has been shortlisted after a thorough review of available municipal properties.

"This is a major step forward for our community," said Mayor Danielle Okafor-Price. "For years, we have talked about the need for a permanent shelter that provides dignity and hope for our most vulnerable neighbours. Getting to this point means we can finally move from temporary solutions to a purpose-built facility that meets everyone's needs."

The selected site will go through a formal rezoning and development process. Before any construction begins, the City will launch a public consultation period starting in October 2025. Residents will have the chance to share feedback on how the new shelter will fit into the neighbourhood and what services it should offer.

The new facility is designed to replace our current seasonal operations with year-round support. While Safe Nights Wrenford currently provides 40 beds and daily meals during the colder months, the permanent shelter will operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It will include secure intake screening, on-site case management, and direct connections to the Coordinated Access Program for long-term housing.

"We are shifting our focus to the future of emergency shelter services," said Fiona Gallagher, General Manager of Community Services. "This project is about people. It is about creating a safe, warm place where residents can access the health and social services they need while they work toward permanent housing."

The City will continue to collaborate with provincial partners and local service providers as the project moves forward. All development will follow the City's Housing Strategy 2025–2030, ensuring that the new shelter acts as a bridge to stable homes rather than a long-term stay.

The City will share updates on the consultation schedule and planning steps on our website and through local neighbourhood networks. If you have questions about current shelter access or housing supports, please reach out to the Coordinated Access Intake Line.
