The City of Wrenford is making it easier for you to recycle food and yard waste. Starting October 1, 2025, the East Wrenford Waste Management Facility will launch a new drop-off program for household organic recycling. This service is designed to keep more material out of the landfill, which helps manage long-term disposal costs and supports the Waste Management Strategy 2026–2030.
Wrenford currently collects Green Bin organics curbside, but you can now bring additional items directly to the facility's depot. These items include meat scraps, dairy products, bones, coffee grounds, and soiled paper like pizza boxes. The new program fills a gap for residents who live in apartments without curbside organics collection or those who need to dispose of large volumes of yard waste outside of the regular pickup schedule.
"The more organic waste you divert from the landfill, the longer our facility stays open and the less we spend on tipping fees," says Ben Achterberg, Waste Programs Supervisor. "This new drop-off window is a practical step toward our goal of diverting 60 per cent of residential waste by 2030, and it keeps property tax increases lower by reducing our reliance on off-site disposal."
Residents can bring accepted materials Monday to Saturday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the facility located at 3500 Concession 4 Road. There is no fee for residents to drop off organic material at the depot. However, businesses and multi-unit buildings must still follow the Waste Management By-law 2023-105 for commercial organics handling.
To prepare, residents should store organic waste in a freezer or a sealed container to avoid odours and pests. If you have large amounts of grass clippings or branches, please place them in paper yard-waste bags or bundle them neatly at the curb. The City's waste trucks will continue to pick up Green Bins on the usual biweekly schedule.
This expansion is funded through the 2026 operating budget, which prioritized waste diversion infrastructure to keep municipal services affordable. By keeping organic waste in the Wrenford loop, the City reduces the volume sent to the landfill, which directly impacts the long-term financial plan.
