The shelter at the Downtown Transit Terminal is back in good shape. Crews from the Roads & Winter Maintenance department finished their repairs this week, making the waiting area safer and more comfortable for transit riders.
The shelter had been showing signs of wear after a long winter. Cold temperatures and snow removal equipment had cracked the base panels and loosened the glass. Crews worked over the past two weeks to remove the damaged parts, pour a new concrete base, and install fresh glass and framing. They also treated the surrounding pavement to fix cracks that formed from freeze-thaw cycles.
"We know how important a dry, safe place to wait is when you are catching the bus, especially during the colder months," said James Whitford, Roads Superintendent. "We want to make sure our transit terminals are in top condition for everyone using them."
The repairs did not affect bus schedules or route maps. Transit vehicles continued to stop at the terminal as usual. Crews made sure the work zone stayed clear of bus lanes and kept the main entrance open throughout the project.
If you notice any other damaged curbs, cracked pavement, or broken fixtures near transit stops in your neighbourhood, please let us know. You can report a sidewalk issue or report a street light issue through the city's online service request tool.
The terminal is located at 1 Market Square in the heart of downtown. It serves as a key hub for routes 1 through 14, providing easy connections across the city. The improved shelter is now ready for the spring and summer riding season.
