On Wednesday, December 10, the City of Wrenford officially opened the expanded inclusive playground at Ambrel Lake Park. The new addition gives children of all abilities a safe and welcoming space to play, explore, and make friends.
Located at 1350 Ambrel Lake Road, the expansion adds several features to the existing park. These include a wheelchair-accessible glider swing, a ground-level spinner, and a sensory play structure with textured and auditory elements. A STEM play machine and a symbol-based communication board help children of different ages and needs connect and learn through play. The area also now features rubberized surfacing, a shaded seating deck, and secure fencing.
The total cost for the expansion was $450,000. Funding came from a mix of sources, including a provincial recreation grant, donations from local community groups, and the City’s capital budget. The City provided the land, construction management, and the remainder of the funding.
“This playground expansion shows our strong commitment to building spaces where every child can play together,” said Mayor Danielle Okafor-Price. “By focusing on universal design, we are creating a place where families of all abilities can gather, relax, and enjoy the outdoors.”
Work on the expansion began in the spring of 2025 after community feedback highlighted the need for better accessibility, shade, and seating. The new features were chosen to meet those needs and to support the City’s Inclusive playgrounds framework.
You can visit the playground during the park’s regular hours. The park is open year-round, and the playground is accessible via the main pathway from Ambrel Lake Park. If you notice any maintenance issues or have suggestions for future accessibility improvements, you can report them through the Accessibility feedback page or call 311.
