The City of Wrenford's Waste Wise Ambassador program is officially kicking off its new season of community outreach this week. A team of trained volunteers will be visiting local neighbourhood associations, community centres, and schools to help residents sort their waste correctly and learn how to take advantage of the City's recycling and organics services.
The outreach visits begin at Riverside Flats Park on May 20 and will continue through the summer at locations including Benchlands Lookout Park, Ambrel Lake Park, and the Northgate Drop-off Depot. Ambassadors will be handing out sorting guides, answering questions about the Blue Bin and Green Bin collection schedules, and showing residents how to use the Waste Wizard online tool to figure out where items go.
"Getting the right items in the right bin is the fastest way to keep our landfill full of things that actually need to be there, and our recycling streams clean and usable," says Ben Achterberg, Waste Programs Supervisor. "Our ambassadors are here to make the process simple and stress-free for every household."
The program focuses on three key areas: reducing contamination in the Blue Bin, expanding backyard and curbside composting, and helping multi-unit residents navigate shared waste stations. Volunteers are also collecting feedback from residents to help the City plan future collection changes and educational events.
If you have questions about what can go in your carts, need help setting up a new account, or just want to learn more about how Wrenford is working toward its 60 per cent waste diversion target by 2030, stop by the ambassadors' booth at your local park or community event. You can also find full collection schedules, contamination tips, and the Waste Wizard lookup tool on the Garbage & Recycling page.
Residents interested in joining the volunteer network can attend an orientation at Room 105, Wrenford City Hall, or email the team at [email protected]. The City also offers a free backyard composter rebate and hosts monthly cart washing days at the East Wrenford Waste Management Facility.
