Waste wise program and ambassador

Learn how to reduce your household waste and join the Wrenford Waste Wise Ambassador volunteer program.

About the Waste Wise programme

Every household in Wrenford can help reduce the amount of waste that goes to the landfill. The Waste Wise programme gives you simple steps to sort your waste correctly, cut down on what you throw away, and save money on your utility bills. When you keep waste out of the black cart, you also lower greenhouse gas emissions and protect the Tamsin River watershed.

Get started with the Waste Wizard

Not sure if something belongs in the recycling bin, the green bin, or the black cart? Use the Waste Wizard online tool. It is a free, searchable guide that tells you exactly where each household item goes. You can look up electronics, plastics, paper, and special waste items right from your phone or computer.

Join the Waste Wise Ambassador network

Do you love helping your neighbours and your community? The Waste Wise Ambassador programme trains volunteers to share waste reduction tips in their own neighbourhoods. Ambassadors hand out sorting guides, answer questions at community events, and help new residents set up their waste bins.

You do not need any special experience to join. The City provides free training, a volunteer starter kit, and ongoing support. Ambassadors give back about two hours a month and meet with other volunteers once a quarter.

How to become an ambassador

  1. Fill out the online volunteer application or stop by the intake desk at Wrenford City Hall, 100 Mercer Street.
  2. Attend a one-hour orientation session held on the first Tuesday of every month from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
  3. Complete the short waste sorting workshop and receive your starter kit.
  4. Start sharing tips with your neighbours, building managers, or local community groups.

All training and materials are free. Volunteers can earn community service hours or a letter of reference for school and employment applications.

Ways to cut waste at home

Small changes add up quickly. Try these steps to keep more waste out of the landfill:

  • Set up a backyard composter for fruit peels, vegetable scraps, and yard trimmings.
  • Repair items instead of tossing them. Check the Wrenford Reuse Network for local repair cafes and material swaps.
  • Switch to reusable bags, bottles, and containers to cut down on single-use plastics.
  • Keep your green bin clean by lining it with paper bags or certified compostable liners.
