Transit fare evasion policy updated with new enforcement measures

Effective June 1, 2024, the City of Wrenford will update its transit fare evasion policy. The changes introduce new compliance measures, expanded education outreach, and updated penalties under the Transit System By-law 2017-095.

Our transit system serves more than 92,000 residents every day. We want to make sure our buses and terminals remain safe, welcoming, and affordable for everyone. This update focuses on education first, followed by clear enforcement for those who repeatedly avoid paying their fare.

What is changing:

  • Compliance staff on the ground: Transit Peace Officers and fare compliance staff will be more visible on high-ridership routes and at the Downtown Transit Terminal. Their main job is to answer questions and help riders use their passes correctly.
  • Education before fines: First-time offenders will receive a polite warning and a guide on how to buy and load digital passes on the Wrenford Transit app. We believe that most fare issues come from confusion, not intent.
  • Updated penalties: Riders who repeatedly ride without paying will face a fine of $250.00 under the municipal by-law. You can pay or dispute a transit ticket online or by mail.
  • Payment plans: If you are struggling to pay an existing fare fine, contact Revenue Services to set up a monthly payment plan. We want to help you get back on track.

“We want every rider in Wrenford to have a safe and reliable trip,” said Daniel Osei, Transit Manager. “These changes are about making sure our system stays affordable and accessible for everyone, while giving people the tools and information they need to pay correctly. Our transit team is here to help, not to punish.”

How to stay compliant:

  • Buy a monthly or annual pass through the Wrenford Transit app or at the Downtown Transit Terminal.
  • Check the Transit fares and passes page for the latest fare options and youth and senior discounts.
  • Report a transit safety concern or ask about the Transit Peace Officer programme on the Transit public safety and security page.

Transit services continue to run on regular schedules. For route changes or service alerts, visit the Transit disruptions and service alerts page or sign up for Wrenford Transit Alerts.
