Trail closure at Benchlands Lookout for geological survey work

Trail users are advised of a temporary closure along the Tamsin River Trail System near Benchlands Lookout Park. A section of the trail leading to the lookout platform will be closed for approximately three days, beginning Monday, July 15, 2024.

The closure is required to allow a licensed geological survey team to assess soil stability and bedrock conditions along the ravine edge. This preliminary work supports the city's upcoming Active Transportation Network Strategy and helps ensure long-term safety for pedestrians and cyclists using the trail. The survey will also look at how the ravine slope handles heavy rainfall, which is important for planning future trail upgrades.

Crews will be conducting ground-penetrating radar surveys and collecting core samples. The work will take place between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Traffic control officers will be on site to guide users onto the marked detour route, which follows the paved path along Benchlands Drive. Please obey all barricades and signage. If you are using the trail for your daily commute, plan to leave a few extra minutes for your trip.

"We understand that trail closures are an inconvenience, but this survey is a necessary step to protect the ravine's natural features and keep our multi-use trails safe for everyone," said Maya Chen-Watson, Parks Planner. "We have scheduled the work during the week to minimize impact on weekend recreation. Our team has also worked closely with environmental consultants to make sure we do not disturb active bird nests or sensitive plant areas."
