Leaf collection begins this weekend in Wrenford. City crews will start picking up paper yard-waste bags on Saturday, May 4, and continue through Sunday, May 5. Residents in the Downtown, Riverside Flats, and Old Mill neighbourhoods are first in line, with other wards following in scheduled waves through November.
Make sure your bags are ready before 7:00 a.m. on collection day. Only paper yard-waste bags are accepted. Do not use plastic bags, even if they say compostable or biodegradable. Crews cannot collect plastic, and it can damage sorting equipment at the processing facility.
If your leaves do not fit in your green bin, place them in paper bags instead. The green bin goes out on your regular weekly organics collection day, not on leaf collection weekends. Keep bags dry and place them at the curb where snowplows will not block them. If a bag is missed, leave it out. Crews will come back the next week.
“We know getting the leaves out can feel like a race against the wind,” says Ben Achterberg, Waste Programs Supervisor. “Paper bags keep our sorting lines running smoothly and help us turn your yard waste into useful compost for our parks and community gardens.”
You can pick up paper yard-waste bags at most local grocers, hardware stores, and garden centres. They are also available at the East Wrenford Waste Management Facility. If you have a large amount of leaves, consider dropping them off at the facility or using the green bin over several weeks.
Remember to keep leaves off the street and out of catch basins. Raking or blowing leaves onto the road can block storm drains, create slippery hazards for pedestrians, and lead to fines under the Parking bylaws and regulations. Use a rake or leaf blower to keep sidewalks and gutters clear.
