The City of Wrenford is pleased to announce that accessibility upgrades at Kingfisher Outdoor Pool and Wildrye Splash Pad are now complete. The improvements, finished ahead of the summer season, make it easier for residents of all abilities to enjoy outdoor water recreation across the city.
At Kingfisher Outdoor Pool, staff have installed a new zero-depth entry zone with a gradual slope, replacing the previous steep ladder access. Handrails now line both sides of the main staircase, and a new transfer bench has been added to the deep end. The splash pad at Wildrye Park received a non-slip surface upgrade, wider pathways for wheelchairs and strollers, and additional shade structures. Both sites also feature new accessible washroom stalls and changing rooms with grab bars and lowered sinks, in line with the City's inclusion standards.
"Making our outdoor spaces welcoming for everyone is a priority," said Katrina Doucet, the City's Accessibility Coordinator. "These changes remove physical barriers so families can spend time together without worrying about accessibility."
Residents can now request a Leisure Companion through the Recreation & Culture department to help with pool visits. Wrenford Access specialized transit provides door-to-door service to both locations. For those driving, accessible parking permits are accepted in the designated spaces near the main entrances. The City also provides sensory backpacks at the pool desk and free beach access mats at the splash pad during peak hours.
