Fire Rescue is asking all Wrenford residents to test and maintain their smoke and carbon monoxide alarms before the colder months. Starting this month, the department is rolling out a city-wide compliance campaign to make sure every home has working alarms in place.
Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are your first line of defence in a house fire. The national fire safety campaign's theme for this year is "Smoke alarms: Make them work for you." We encourage you to check your alarms every month by pressing the test button. If your alarms are more than ten years old, or if they are chirping and you cannot fix them with a fresh battery, please call Fire Rescue at 519-555-0115 to book an inspection appointment.
A Fire Prevention Officer will visit your home to check the alarms and advise on the next steps. You may be eligible to receive a new smoke or carbon monoxide alarm for your home. Seniors aged 65 and older, as well as low-income residents, can book a free home inspection and battery replacement through the Wrenford Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Alarm Inspection Program. Standard inspection fees are $25.00 for other residents, and this fee is waived for eligible households.
Throughout October, Fire Rescue officers will also host pop-up information booths at local community hubs. Stop by to chat about fire safety, ask questions, and pick up a free alarm testing checklist. You can also drop by Fire Station 1 (Headquarters) at 210 Water Street during administration hours to speak with our team in person.
"Keeping your family safe starts with a simple test button," says Deputy Fire Chief Simon Hartley. "We want to make sure every resident in Wrenford knows how to check their alarms and where to get help if they need a new one."
Fire Prevention Week runs from October 6 to October 12, 2024. Mark your calendars for more events, open house tours, and educational sessions across the city.
