Emergency shelter site selected at Eastfield location

City Council has approved the selection of a site on Eastfield Road for a new emergency shelter. The project will expand the Safe Nights Wrenford program and improve access to supports for residents experiencing homelessness. The new shelter will open its doors in December 2024.

The selected property is a former commercial building at 700 Eastfield Road. The City will work with the shelter operator to make necessary upgrades to the facility. These improvements include adding secure entry points, expanding the sleeping area, and creating a dedicated intake space for the Coordinated Access Program. The new site will also allow staff to provide longer hours and better case management support.

“We know that emergency shelter is more than just a bed for the night,” said Robert Eng, City Manager. “By securing this location in Eastfield, we are building a safer, more supportive environment where you can connect with health services, housing resources, and employment support without having to travel across the city.”

The shelter will operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It will provide up to 40 beds, matching the current capacity of Safe Nights Wrenford, but with improved safety features and climate-controlled spaces. The City will also fund on-site security patrols and regular site maintenance to ensure the neighbourhood remains safe and well-kept.

Construction and interior upgrades will begin in October 2024. The shelter is expected to welcome guests by early December, just in time for the winter months. The operator will continue to run daily services, including meal preparation, laundry access, and health screenings in partnership with Tamsin Valley Public Health.
