Election advertising rules and sign bylaws updated for 2026

The City of Wrenford has updated its election sign and flyer distribution rules to reduce clutter and keep public spaces clear ahead of the October 26, 2026 municipal election. The revisions, approved by Council on September 10, take effect immediately and apply to all candidates, political parties, and third-party advertisers.

Under the updated rules, political signs may only be placed on private property with the explicit consent of the owner, occupant, or strata corporation. Signs are strictly prohibited on highways, boulevards, sidewalks, traffic control devices, trees, bushes, fire hydrants, or any other public property. Campaign offices will continue to require a separate sign permit.

Signs must be non-illuminated, feature no more than two faces, and measure no larger than three square metres per face. The maximum height is three metres, and signs must be placed at least 0.3 metres apart. All materials must comply with the Municipal Elections Act, 1996, the Election Finances Act, and the Highway Traffic Act. Candidates may not use the City's official logo or heraldic emblems in their campaign materials.

Flyer distribution has also been updated to address resident concerns about unwanted deliveries. Distributors must respect posted "No Flyers" signs and are prohibited from leaving materials in driveways, on occupied doors, or in locations that could damage property. The updated by-law does not apply to official government mailers, newspapers, or election advertising materials. Violations carry fines ranging from $300 to $2,100, with an administrative penalty of $150 available in lieu of court prosecution.

"We want every election to be a fair and transparent process, but that should not come at the cost of a cluttered streetscape or frustrated residents," said Mayor Danielle Okafor-Price. "These updates strike the right balance between protecting free speech and maintaining the character of our neighbourhoods."

You can review the full sign bylaw framework before the campaign period begins. Campaign offices can apply for permits through the Sign permits and applications page. After the election, you must remove all political signs within 72 hours, or the City will issue a removal notice. You can report unauthorized signs or illegal flyer distribution using the How to dispose of election signs guide.
