East Wrenford Waste Management Facility upgrades sorting technology

The City of Wrenford is upgrading the sorting technology at the East Wrenford Waste Management Facility on 3500 Concession 4 Road. The project will begin in July 2024 and run through October 2024, with work happening during regular facility hours Monday to Saturday.

The new automated sorting lines will replace equipment that has been in service for over a decade. Upgraded sensors and conveyor systems will make it easier to separate paper, plastics, and glass from general waste. The improvements will also expand the capacity for processing Green Bin organics and reduce the amount of material sent to the landfill.

These upgrades are part of the City's Waste Management Strategy and the capital works program. They will help Wrenford reach its goal of diverting sixty per cent of residential waste by 2030. The City is funding the project through the 2024 operating and capital budgets. This investment supports long-term infrastructure maintenance and ensures the facility can meet growing community needs without raising fees.

During the installation period, some collection schedules may shift slightly. Residents in the south-east wards should expect their Blue Box and Green Bin pickup to move by one day. The City will send notices to affected households. In the meantime, keep sorting materials clean and dry, and place them at the curb by 7:00 a.m. on your collection day. You can continue to use the drop-off depot for bulky items and household hazardous waste as usual.

“The new sorting equipment will handle more of what you bring to the curb and keep more material out of the landfill,” says Ben Achterberg, Waste Programs Supervisor. “It is a key step toward meeting our diversion targets and keeping service fees stable.”
