At its June 18 meeting, Council approved amendments to the city’s tree protection rules to better preserve mature trees across Wrenford. The changes, which take effect on August 1, 2024, update the Tree Protection By-law to match the city’s growth and give property owners clearer guidance.
Under the new rules, the diameter threshold for a protected tree rises from 20 centimetres to 30 centimetres. You will need a permit to remove any tree that reaches this size on your property. The amendments also require a certified arborist report for any tree over 30 centimetres in diameter, ensuring that removals are carefully reviewed for environmental impact.
For the first time, the city is introducing a “Heritage Tree” designation. Trees with a trunk diameter of 100 centimetres or more will receive special protection and qualify for a reduced permit fee. This change encourages residents and businesses to keep large, historic trees standing during landscaping or construction projects.
“We hear from residents how much they value the shade and character that our older trees bring to our neighbourhoods,” said Elena Petrova, Senior Planner. “These amendments give us a stronger tool to protect that canopy while making the permit process easier to follow.”
If you are planning any landscaping, grading, or construction work that affects trees, you must check the updated rules before you start. Property owners can apply online or pick up a form at City Hall. You will also need to submit a tree protection plan showing how the remaining trees will be guarded during construction.
